I have been bombarded lately with e-mails about “the book that the ACLU does not want to see in print again.” The title of the book is Christian life and character of the civil institutions of the United States: developed in the official and historical annals of the republic, by Benjamin Franklin Morris. This book was first printed in 1864 so I was sure it was no longer under copyright. It is free for the reading at Google Books.
I have not read the book yet. If you go to Google Books and read a few pages of the flowery, 18th century prose you will understand why I anticipate spending quite some time reading this book.
The opening quotes should be enough to provoke anyone’s interest:
“True religion affords to Government its surest support.” –Washington
“The highest glory of the American Revolution was this. It connected to one indissoluble bond the principles of principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”–John Quincy Adams
“The religion of the New Testament–that religion which is founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ and his Apostles–is so sure a guide to duty in politics and legilation as in any concern of life.”–Daniel Webster
“Righteousness exalteth a nation”–Bible
This page will be a “running commentary” based on my reading the book cited above and the concept that this nation is a Christian Nation founded on Biblical principles.
You tell them Bubba…wish the President understood this.
