SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO MISSION. San Juan Capistrano Mission, formerly the East Texas mission of San José de los Nazonis, was renamed in 1731, when it was moved to the site of present San Antonio twelve miles from the Alamo.qv*  San Juan Capistrano did not make as much progress as did the other San Antonio missions because of its exposure to frequent Indian attacks and the fact that lands allotted to the mission were not sufficient for its horses and cattle and the raising of the required crops.

Handbook of Texas Online, s.v. "SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO MISSION," (accessed May 2, 2006).

* quod vide (q.v.)  stands for, "can be found elsewhere" in this Handbook.

* sub verbo (s.v.) stands for, "under the word.")

The jungle like setting of the San Antonio River

San Antonio River spanned by trees and mustang grape vines

You can barely glimpse the river in the center of the picture

This is the jungle that most of San Antonio would be if left undeveloped. Yes, the river is in there somewhere

The riverside walks are all either boards or paved. The river walk is handicap accessible

If you tire there are pleasantly shaded seats where one may sit, relax and watch the birds

You will not find the boisterous crowds from the downtown river walk at San Juan Capistrano.  This is a quiet spot for leisurely strolls and contemplation.  The river woodlands abound with birds and small animals.  There is signage to help you identify the wildlife.  This is a new park service improvement to the mission grounds that only recently was officially opened.
